iPhone 2.2 OS: Jailbroken before Officially Released

According to my source, iPhone OS 2.2 is still being developed, and therefore (of course) it hasn’t been released yet. There will be some improvements, and I do hope that Apple includes the copy and paste functionality and and of course increased speed and reliability in to the new OS … Don’t you agree?

However, I’ve got a pretty shocking post over at the internet saying that the iPhone Dev Team have successfully jailbroke the new OS; even though it is in its beta version. The iPhone Dev Team has confirmed a jailbreak and unlock solution working on an original iPhone, which probably means that the iPhone 3G will also be getting the jailbreak treatment as soon as Apple goes live with the iPhone 2.2 OS.

The second beta of firmware version 2.2 has been out for a few days.  It looks like Apple still doesn’t have a fix for devices already prone to the pwnage jailbreak and unlock.

Of course, only the original iPhone can be SIM-unlocked via the iPhone Dev Team’s software-based unlock solution. iPhone 3G owners will have to keep waiting, fingers crossed, in hopes that the iPhone Dev Team can finally put their baseband access to good use.

Oh, and remember to keep updating your iPhone via jailbreak (Pwnage Tool) in order to ensure that you preserve the older baseband firmware that the iPhone Dev Team is working to unlock - iPhone OS updates come bundled from Apple with newer baseband firmwares that may not be unlockable when push comes to shove, so the iPhone Dev Team’s Pwnage Tool updates your iPhone with an older baseband firmware.

Meanwhile, here’s the (rumored) features of the new OS:

Walking directions
Having just arrived to New York, I would definitely use this feature more than anything else. This would make Maps a lot more useful for all pedestrians, who can make a better use of the iPhone hardware than drivers.

Public transport information
Another great feature specially for big cities. I wish they could invest more on this, like connecting to status servers of public transport networks. That would actually make it perfect for commuters.

Street View
This will allow you to see any location in Google Maps that has Street Views, which is useful to get familiar with unknown places and for those people who are map-reading impaired.

Share location
If you are in the Maps application, you can share a location by just clicking a button, which will send an email with the URL to see the address in Maps. It’s not actual real-time location sharing (and very low tech) but since we don’t have any kind of copy and paste, it’s better than nothing. Other than actually talking on the phone, that is.

Line-In sound access for developers
Apparently, the new OS update allows developers to have access to the sound part of the iPhone hardware. This opens the door for better microphones or high quality voice recognition.

Over-the-air podcast updates
This one will make TV and radio lovers happy, as many programs would be available from anywhere rather than having to connect to your computer every time you want to synchronize to get the lastest updates. Japan will also get exclusive Emoji emoticons, as well as TV streaming support using a Wi-Fi accessory.
