There’s a new cool concept phone design from Matt Brady (with a slight of retouching by Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz), which is an alternative for those who just don’t like the slide QWERTY keyboard (Found in last week concepts, the iPhone Pro and iPhone Elite). This one offers you a flip QWERTY keyboard and it certainly makes iPhone looks like a big clamshell phone (IntoMobile’s James Falconer named it iClamshell, and I think that it suits it). This concept would allow the iPhone user to ‘add on’ different accessories. In this case, a snap-on keyboard. Interesting. This would certainly open up the door for Apple and a lot of 3rd party accessory manufacturers to go nuts with add-ons for the device.

But enough about that, what the heck do you think of this concept? Would it fly? Is it something you’d be interested in? Or does it look just plain terrible to you? Tell me what you think in the comments.

One thing is for certain… These concepts are great, and they certainly get you thinking about what you want in your next gen iPhone… But the real important thing is what does Apple think you want in your next gen iPhone!? We’ll find out shortly at Macworld. Going to be lots of good stuff to talk about following the keynote, that’s for sure!

There’s a new and pretty cool Android Freeware available. In case you haven’t notice, there’s a video circulating over at the internet about how Joshua Sera controlling his Mac from his Android G1 device. The Android freeware named RemoteDroid and it is the first of its kind for Android, even though similar applications have already been around on the iPhone for awhile (I like to use ‘remote’ for controlling iTunes… but that’s about it!).

The RemoteDroid app that Joshua has built looks pretty darn good. As you’ll see in the video above, he uses his T-Mobile G1 to perform a number of tasks on his notebook. He uses the trackball to manipulate the cursor, touches the screen to perform mouse clicks, highlights text and even enters text direct from the G1.

You can download the T-Mobile G1 Android Freeware here. Anyway, Key features of RemoteDroid include:

User-selectable mouse control

Two onscreen mouse buttons, with right-click/control-click functionality

Use in either portrait or landscape mode

Works with any WiFi network - no Bluetooth hardware or adapters required

Compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux

Very cool stuff. Again, you can get more info and see the video at RemoteDroid. Anyway, if there’s anyone out there who have tried the application, please do share your experience with the freeware Leave comments under

Did you read my previous post about the unlocking software for iPhone 3G from iPhone Dev Team? Apparently some people who tried the jailbreaking software for iPhone 3G were having some trouble. And now, the iPhone Dev Team have released a new version of the iPhone 3G unlocking software. The revised Beta version is v0.9.4 (previously it was v0.9.1).

Yellowsnow 0.9.4 Beta is out now which addresses some complaints that have trickled in upon the release of the group’s first iPhone 3G unlock. By default, it’s now always in quick mode unless you enable the –l option for long mode. PIN support still isn’t quite there yet, but given how fast they were able to come out with this new iteration of Yellowsnow, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if PIN support would become available within the month.

If this new iPhone 3G unlock still doesn’t work on your end, send your complaints to the iPhone Dev Team here so that they can include an appropriate fix in their next release.

So later in December we told you about the issue of unlocking software for iPhone 3G. So the iPhone Dev Team promised that in new year’s eve they will release a software to unlock the iPhone 3G. This software later known as the yellowst0ne, and it seems that the iPhone Dev Team has kept their promise by releasing the highly anticipated iPhone 3G unlock. Nevertheless the yellowst0ne is still in 0.9.1beta version, so some sides questioned the reliability. But it still is exciting, isn’t it?

Here are some important quotes from their blog regarding this latest release:

BASICS

The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.

The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).

yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

DETAILS

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix.

For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.

After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

RANDOM

The application is version 0.9.1. This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.

The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.

UPDATES

If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line -q right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it)

No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.

The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.

As you can see, there are some limitations to this unlock app, but hey, it’s free anyway so who are we to argue with that? So if you’re ready to give this iPhone 3G unlock a go, you can find it at the following locations:

Cydia: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
Installer: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/

Hope you enjoy guys, and don’t forget to hit us up at the comments section below. We’d love to hear your two cents (or more) about this new iPhone 3G unlock from the iPhone Dev Team.

Blackberry Storm’s web browser is nice and decent. It also enough to browse YouTube videos. However, a dedicated client usually will bring you much richer experience and that is what exactly Google is doing right now. So according to my source, Google has released a free YouTube client for BlackBerry Storm, the very first Blackberry device with touchscreen.

YouTube client’s features including:

Browse millions of videos, including most viewed, top rated, and the day’s featured videos.

Access your YouTube account on your phone and access your Favorites, Playlists, and your own uploaded videos.

Upload videos directly from your phone and see them appear within moments on both the mobile site and YouTube.com.

Favorite, share, rate, and comment on videos directly from the mobile website to other YouTube users.

Find the specific video you’re looking for by easily searching for it.

Discover “Related” videos for each video you watch on your phone.

So you can download the free youtube client for Blackberry Storm by following the link under and then you enter your phone number. Then Google will send you a link to download the free Blackberry Storm YouTube Client. The second way is you connect to the internet from your Blackberry Storm browser and go to m.google.com/youtube.

Here’s The link; Enjoy

So, finally we have the side by side comparison of the most anticipated Nseries phones from Nokia this year, which are the Nokia N85, N96 and N97. Several time ago I posted a comparison between the Nokia N96 and N85, and that time I told you that N85 is better than N96.
So which one is your favorite? I personally choose the Nokia N85, even though it doesn’t pack a touchscreen like the Nokia N97. How about you?

Everybody loves Android, which was launched along with the T-Mobile Android G1. Application in Android platform have developed pretty significant in several months; and the presence of the Android Platform have opened so much opportunities for developers with its openness. So after several months of its launched, I have to admit that Android really has the potential to shake the domination of Apple iPhone and iPhone 3G lately. But it still is a long journey. Just like our folks at Gizmodo said: Android devices need to be a lot more numerous in consumers’ hands, numerous enough for third-party developers (along with Google’s first-party talent as well) to have a major incentive to drive the platform forward. It also has some major network power-management issues to overcome; the G1’s battery never makes it through the day for me, and while that may just be because it’s a shitty battery, Android’s always-on approach to network access and background processes surely plays a part.

The Android Market is not yet the iPhone App Store, but here is a taste of what is, hopefully, a lot more to come. So enjoy the list of best Android Applications throughout 2008 after the jump

Anycut: Anycut takes advantage of one of Android’s fundamental strengths—the distillation of every possible event your phone can do—send a text message, go to a specific URL in a browser, etc—into a system-wide Intent, which any app can in turn access. Anycut allows you to take any intent and create a desktop shortcut for it—say, opening all of your Gmail messages labeled with a specific tag, or sending an SMS message to your most-texted contact.

Compare Everywhere: Like a hybrid of Japan’s QR codes and Google SMS’s UPC price check feature, Compare Everywhere reads barcodes (of just about everything, from a Criterion Blu-ray of The Man Who Fell to Earth I just watched to the stick of Right Guard sitting on my desk) and gives you a list of best prices—from online sources as well as physical brick-and-mortar shops near your GPS coordinates. The haptic buzz indicating a successful scan is unbelievably satisfying, and saves you money.

Shazam: Shazam’s same great song identification skills—able to snatch notes from the barroom’s speakers and pick the song in seconds—here on Android, co-existing with its identical iPhone version and similar ones for dumbphones. It’s an amazing trick, regardless of the platform, and good to see one of the bigger hits on the iPhone quickly and smoothly ported over.

TuneWiki: Still jailbreak-only for the iPhone since apps can’t access your iPod music, TuneWiki can show its full potential on Android, grabbing lyrics (that scroll karaoke style) and videos for all of your music as it plays.

Video Player: Video player plays H.264 MPEG4 clips, making up for a glaring hole left open in Android’s first release: no video player. It gets the job done, and is a prime candidate for something to get sucked back up into the core Android distribution, as is an open source project’s frequent wont.

Power Manager: Another necessity that’s both a blessing and a curse, Power Manager lets you take limited control over the things that influence how long your battery will live—turning on/off all the radios, GPS, adjusting screen brightness, etc according to your current power level. It shouldn’t be a necessary app for G1 owners, but it is; on the other hand, it shows how easy it is for a developer to fill a need and access hardware directly without having to ask permission. System-level functions like this, in large part, are not available to iPhone developers, and that’s notable.

WikiTude: One of the apps we were most excited about at launch, WikiTude could still use some polishing, but it shows just how cool augmented reality apps can be. Overlaying link to geo-tagged Wikipedia articles on your camera’s live view image utilizing the G1’s built-in compass and accelerometer, it’s an amazing thing to fire up on my roof in Brooklyn. Not so useful in the living room, but it’s a great proof of William Gibson’s classic notion—overlaying data from the web onto our live view of the world.

PhoneFusion Visual Voicemail: Solid visual voicemail support for Android. Another example of something other platform/carrier combos make you pay for (ahem, Verizon) or don’t let you access at all.

Chomp SMS: Well, what do we have here. This looks familiar. Chomp is a replacement SMS app that mimics the iPhone’s iChat-inspired text interface, and also happens to include a great soft keyboard looking exactly like the iPhone’s, but adding haptic feedback—something coming to future Android distros. It also ties into Android’s system-wide notification services, so if you want to drop the default SMS app altogether, you can.

Locale: In early versions, Locale was cool: it changed your ringtone or a few other phone settings based on your GPS location. Then, the features started coming, like the ability to send Tweets or use several other of Android’s Intents, and it became clear exactly what Locale is—a framework (like Applescript, essentially) for triggering anything on your phone according to your location. When I’m at the office, set Facebook status to frowny face. When I get home and it’s before 4PM, tweet “meet me at the bar” and start playing “O Happy Day.”

Hmm…Interesting isn’t it? So a student from Carleton University in Canada named Atif Shamin have tweaked his iPhone and extended the battery life of iPhone up to 12x longer than regular iPhone. So the PhD student invention’s name is ‘transmitter system on-package’. He modified the connection between cell phone antenna and the circuit board. So instead of using wire, he designed a high frequency micro-transmitter and receiver which is to avoid the usual loss of power pumping bits through a wire. He created a module replacing all the wires connecting a phone’s electrical circuits and antennae, making all of them communicate wirelessly. This device make the efficiency 12 times over which greatly improving the battery life. Great, I must say. [Source]

One of the most frequent complains I heard about iPhone is the lack of Flash. Yup, this fact have drive many camera-focused consumer away from the iPhone 2G and 3G. However, there’s a good news from Snapture Labs. They said that they’re preparing a new accessory for iPhone which allows iPhone to have not just a Flash, but Xenon Flash.

The company known for providing a popular software for iPhone cameras, has recently presented its patent-pending “Xenon attachment for iPhone”. This looks somehow like a protective case and, obviously, it adds a Xenon flash to the handset’s camera.

The Xenon camera accessory is only a prototype for the moment, meaning that you still cannot make your iPhone a good photography tool in low light conditions.

However, Snapture Labs is working on the product and it will commercialize it sometime in the future, for both the iPhone 2G and the iPhone 3G.

No word yet about the exact release date and the price of the Xenon wonder, but you can get on a waiting list for it by visiting the Snapture website.
