iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS Comparison @ gadgetwidgets.com

I’m sure all of you know that Apple has announced the iPhone 4 last week. Quoting what Steve Jobs said; “the iPhone 4 might be the biggest leap since the original iPhone”, making us wonder, which one is better? the new iPhone 4 or the iPhone 3GS. What are the differences? What exactly change? How good is the iPhone 4 compared to the 3GS? You’ll find all the answer to that in this iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS comparison.

We will do several iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS comparison based on the specs and features. I haven’t got the chance to hold iPhone 4 in my hand, so this is the best I can do for now.

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS Design Comparison

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS design n size

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS design n size

On the first look, the new iPhone 4 comes with a pretty similar size compared to iPhone 3GS.  However, in terms of design, the iPhone 4 is less-wider than 3GS, and it is 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS. The backside of the iPhone 4 is also flat, unlike the iPhone 3GS. Both phones have a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. The new iPhone 4 also features an Now regarding the design, people might have different opinions. But if you ask me, I prefer the thin iPhone 4. Checkout the size and design comparison image above :)

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS Processor Comparison

The new iPhone 4 utilizes the Apple A4 1GHz processor, while iPhone 3GS uses Cortex-A8 600Mhz processor. So the 400MB increase in the CPU speed is quite something. However, compared to all new smartphones, the 1GHz processor is not a ground-breaking speed. But compared to the iPhone 3GS, it sure means more speed :)

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS Display Comparison

iphone 4 vs iphone 3Gs display

iphone 4 vs iphone 3Gs display

Apple has surely upgrade the display of the iPhone 4. While both of iPhone 4 and 3GS have the same screen size (3.5 inches) and the same multi-touch abilities, Steve Jobs introduced the Retina display technology used in the iPhone 4. It is obvious with the iPhone 4’s resolution of 960-by-640-pixel (at 326 ppi), the iPhone 3GS screen is way below it (480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 ppi).

If that’s not enough, the iPhone 4 has 800:1 contrast ratio – that’s 4x of iPhone 3GS. In other words, the iPhone 4 display offers a more crisp and colorful display compared to the iPhone 3GS.

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS Camera Comparison

Everybody knows that Apple constantly upgrade their iPhone camera. This can be seen in the iPhone 4 camera compared to the iPhone 3GS’. With 5 Megapixel camera and the additional LED flash, the iPhone 4 has live up the expectations. It is obviously better than iPhone 3GS’ 3 megapixel camera. And with a better display, what else do you want?  What’s interesting is the addition of front camera for video calling. A feature that most people expected since the announcement of iPhone 3GS. They finally attach a front facing camera in the iPhone! Anyway, the front facing camera is a VGA camera, and it is able to shoot 30 frames per second.

Other camera features remains the same like tap to focus, autofocus, and geotagging abilities.

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS Battery Comparison

The new iPhone comes with a larger battery, and it seems that Apple has done a pretty good job in increasing the talk time etc.

  • iPhone 4 offers up to 7 hours on 3G (14 hours on 2G), Up to 6 hours on 3G connection (10 hours on Wi-Fi), up to 10 hours of video playback and 40 hours of audio playback.
  • iPhone 3GS offers up to 5 hours on 3G (12 hours on 2G), Up to 5 hours on 3G connection (9 hours on Wi-Fi), up to 10 hours of video playback and 30 hours of audio playback.

iPhone 4 vs iPhone 3GS Other Features Comparison

Let’s talk about the specs and features similarities between iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS; both phones are equipped with:

  • Wi-Fi
